Gaming Post 25: LarryBoy and the Bad Apple

A while back, the random number generator told me to write about one of the games that I’ve beaten, however, I’ve been procrastinating about it for some time now (of course while also playing lots of new games). The game was LarryBoy and the Bad Apple on the PlayStation 2. To explain why I played this particular game, I’ll need to explain what VeggieTales is and why it was so cool when it first came out.

Nowadays, lots of our entertainment comprises of 3D rendered content, whether that’s monoscopic or stereoscopic 3D videogames, films, or television shows. It was not so prevalent when I was born though. There are plenty of full length 3D animated films available today, but the very first one was Toy Story which came out in 1995. Every film in this category came out in the past 20 years, which in the grand scheme of things is not a very long time. Before the first Toy Story movie came out, there was a “straight to VHS tape” series that was fully rendered in 3D. This series was VeggieTales, whose first episode came out in 1993, when I was 1. It must have been the coolest thing around.

Veggie93

At the time, there had never ever ever ever ever been a show like VeggieTales. They even say so in the theme song!

VeggieTales was really great. I think I discovered it when I was about 4, when VeggieTales was 3 years into its run and there were only 5 episodes of the show. I think one of my cousins showed it to me after discovering it himself when he went to college. At the time, 3D animation was very exciting no matter what age you were because it was so new and fun. I’m sure many of us don’t even notice it today when we see it, because it’s become such a staple of entertainment in our society. It’s a technology that no longer seems new.

VeggieTales episodes often feature moral dilemmas, sometimes through the retelling of Bible stories but also through original stories. There is always some humor to be found in the episodes, even though the plots of some of them can be slow for older viewers. I kept up with the series until about 2001 when I was 9, but the show seems to have continued at a steady pace.

Larryboy_013

My favorite character was LarryBoy, the alter ego of Larry the Cucumber. Of the episodes that I watched, LarryBoy was in three of them, and was featured heavily in the two of them that took place in the fictional city of Bumblyburg. LarryBoy is a superhero similar to Batman, but he’s also a vegetable like most of the characters in VeggieTales.

Sometimes characters can be fruits. After all, Bob the Tomato has seeds and is thus technically a fruit.

Years after I stopped following VeggieTales, I was going through a shelf of old PS2 games at a GameStop store, and I found a game called “LarryBoy and the Bad Apple”. The game is based on LarryBoy’s third adventure of the same name. I hadn’t seen the episode, so I figured that playing the game would be an approximation of watching the episode, but with added interactivity. That’s when I decided that I would play through the game.

It was a pretty fun experience simply because I grew up watching LarryBoy and had sort of thought that a game about him would be cool. The gameplay was especially good in the segments of the game in which LarryBoy has to fly through the air. As a whole, the game mostly consists of puzzles and platforming. There are cutscenes taken directly from the VeggieTales episode that the game is based on.

Fine_Hello
LarryBoy isn’t completely based on Batman. They went ahead and threw in a reference to Spider-Man too.

The main villain is an Apple who personifies temptation. This is especially interesting because as VeggieTales is limited to a cast of vegetables and fruit, casting the villain as an apple that tempts people cleverly draws a parallel between the villain in this story and the Apple of Eden that tempted Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis. In that way, this was both an original story and biblical. The thematic use of apples to represent temptation and evil is quite old and prevalent throughout literature and other media.

larryboyandthebadapple
The main villain is called The Bad Apple. She is an apple who tempts people. LarryBoy’s temptation is eating too much chocolate.

AssassinsCreed_Al_Mualim_holding_the_Piece_of_Eden
The Piece of Eden is temptation given form. -Al Mualim talking about the mechanical device called the Apple of Eden (Assassin’s Creed)

The villain, so called “The Bad Apple”, goes around tempting people to neglect their responsibilities to do other things they’d like to do instead, getting the mayor to vainly obsess over her appearance and a cook to watch an entire science fiction TV series. LarryBoy breaks people free from their temptations by completing levels, each one given the theme of the person’s temptation. Ironically, one of the people in the game who the Bad Apple has tempted is someone who wants to play video games all day. What’s ironic about this is that in order to make this character pay attention to their real responsibilities, you have to beat a level of this real life video game. The moral of that chapter is to not play videogames all day, and yet this is exactly what I did to finish this game.

Larryboy49

Am I subject to temptation? Absolutely. Do I give in to my temptation? Oh yes, definitely. That’s how I beat so many games.

And so with that, I’ve finished another article on Zelgerath.com. Maybe I can get back in the swing of things. As always, Thanks for Reading! =)

A Brief Majora’s Mask 3D Fishing Guide

This is the first gaming article on Zelgerath.com which was not written because of a Random Number Generator. I’m writing this because I feel that it could help a lot of people who are aiming to 100% complete The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D.

468px-LordChapu

I have recently played The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D to 100% completion. Most of the game is essentially identical to the original game that people know and love, so guides for the original game are very useful to anyone playing the remake. However, a brand new fishing quest was added to the 3DS Remake which has been an unexpected challenge.

Because the fishing in this game is new and only a side quest, there isn’t a lot of reliable information about how to catch all 24 fish in the game, so I decided to write this simple guide to help those of you who are attempting to catch all the fish. I owe much of this information to helpful threads I found online, but it’s here that I want to compile the results and details of my experience with this side quest.

There are 2 Fishing Areas (Fishing Holes) in Majora’s Mask 3D. One is in the Swamp and the other is by the Ocean. Each area has 12 fish to catch, 3 of them being considered “Boss Fish”. There are 6 “Boss Fish” all together, but you’ll only find 3 in the Ocean Fishing Hole and 3 in the Swamp Fishing Hole.

When you enter a fishing hole, the fish will load inside of the water. It is random what appears but not completely (but I’ll get to that later). You don’t have to pay for a fishing rod to check if a specific fish is there or not, so I recommend not paying unless you know there’s a fish you want inside the water. Otherwise, if the fish you’re looking for isn’t there, exit the fishing hole and come back in to check for it again.

I did this quest after 100%ing the rest of the game, so it helps to have every mask and a ton of money.

SWAMP FISHING HOLE

zlCfzTCSAGAypaqIyA

Fish 1: Termina Bass

zlCfzTCRUc8OrtCS6e

A common fish; very easy to find. Learn the basics of fishing catching these.

Fish 2: Termina Loach

zlCfzTCRXzImlZYqBk

Slightly less common fish; I’ve seen them near the bottom, so definitely learn to use the sink lure.

Fish 3: Groovy Carp

zlCfzTCRa_4l_B8izA

These guys are common along the north east edge of the pond. (You might want to buy a map of the Swamp and Ocean from Tingle if you haven’t.)

Fish 4: Sweet Ranchfish

zlCfzTCRensNhLQ4at

This fish can only exist between 6AM and 3PM. It has a chance of appearing if you enter the Fishing hole at or after 6AM, and at 3PM, if they’re in the Fishing Hole, they will disappear, even (I hear) if it’s hooked on your line.

This guy is a little tough. It will be willing to take your bait for a while if you play “Epona’s Song”. It’s not always there, so you might need to run in and out of the Fishing Hole a few times before it appears. What you should do is enter the fishing hole, walk onto this bridge…

zlCfzTCRJqA4vV_dbc

and play Epona’s Song using your Ocarina (It might work with the other instruments, but I don’t know). If it’s there, you should hear a “Success Chime” and there will be ripples at its location until the song wears off. While there are ripples, try getting the bait close to it as you can and it may bite. If the ripples stop before you can catch it, play Epona’s Song again.

Fish 5: Fragrant Reekfish

zlCfzTCRiT8Xx44BMq

To check if it’s there, stand at the water’s edge with your feet in the water and put on the Mask of Scents. If nothing happens, leave the fishing hole and come back. Try again until wearing the mask makes you hear a chime and you see at least one purple cloud on the surface of the water. They have a strong smell, so a purple cloud indicates its location.

Fish 6: Mooranha

zlCfzTCRmUMRRESWyy

To check if it’s there, wear Romani’s Mask (The Cow Mask) and stand on the water’s edge with your feet in the water. If it’s not there, leave the fishing hole and come back. Try again until you hear a chime and ripples appear on the pond. The ripples tell you where the fish is.

Fish 7: Postal Salmon

zlCfzTCRpz4vXZG46s

From 6AM to 9PM, this fish may be moving around the pond in a fairly uniform pattern. If it’s there, you can stop it in its tracks by wearing the Postman Hat. A chime will play, and then you can catch it fairly easily.

Fish 8: Cuccofish

zlCfzTCRtdETRdb26w

This fish cannot appear on Day 2. All other times are okay. To check if it’s there, go to the edge of the water and march with the Bremen Mask. If it’s there, a chime will play, and for a while, there will be ripples, which means that it is willing to take your bait. If the ripples stop before you can catch it, march again with the Bremen Mask and the ripples should start again.

Fish 9: Ancient Fish

zlCfzTCRyAQKCfxYip

This fish is based on the Coelacanth, a prehistoric fish that lives in deep water. As such, you might find this one at the bottom of the pond. The quickest way to check would be to go into the fishing hole as a Zora and walk to the bottom of the pond to see if any are there. Alternatively, you can check by wearing the Gibdo mask and listening for a chime. You must wear the Gibdo mask to make its ripples appear so it can be caught.

Fish 10: Ferocious Pirarucu

zlCfzTCR1doLNWOWXr

This is one of the six “Boss Fish”. To make Boss Fish appear, I recommend catching a lot of fish on Day 1 (I’m just guessing 20 is more than enough). Make sure you are using the song of double time to slow time. It doesn’t matter where the fish are caught, so I would recommend fishing in the Swamp because the fish are easier to catch. If you run low on fish in the pond, leave the fishing hole and come back in. After you have fished for awhile, save your progress at an owl statue, because it is now possible to encounter a boss fish. If you fail to catch it and run out of time, you can return to your last save point and try again.

To check if this guy is in the pond, go into Zora form and walk to the bottom of the pond. If it’s not there, leave the fishing hole and come back. If it is there, you want to hook a fish on your line near him. Don’t reel the smaller fish all the way in, but instead use it as bait to catch the Ferocious Pirarucu. If it grabs the small fish, you have to hook him with the circle pad as if you are catching a new fish or he’ll get away. The boss music will play. Enjoy.

Fish 11: Colossal Catfish

zlCfzTCR40c0oIt7Lc

This fish can only be found on the final day. To check if it’s there, you need to hop to the island in the middle of the pond using your Deku form, and then pound the ground using your Goron form.

zlCfzTCRQ58icNcok4

This is the only reliable way to check, because without shaking the lake in this way, the fish will be invisible. If you hear a chime, the ripples will appear and you can try to catch it. If the ripples stop, just pound the ground on the island again. When you hook it, the boss music will play. Enjoy.

Fish 12: Lord Chapu-Chapu

zlCfzTCR8IwFTGwOMR

This is the Master of the Swamp; A baby Lord Jabu Jabu named Lord Chapu Chapu. To check if this guy is in the pond, go into Zora form and walk to the bottom of the pond. If it’s there, it should be sitting in a small underwater cave on the east edge of the pond.

zlCfzTCRNLYCnUbcSC

If it’s not there, leave the fishing hole and come back. If it is there, you want to hook a fish on your line near him. Don’t reel the smaller fish all the way in, but instead use it as bait to catch Lord Chapu-Chapu. If it grabs the small fish, you have to hook him with the circle pad as if you are catching a new fish or he’ll get away. The boss music will play. Enjoy.

OCEAN FISHING HOLE

zlCfzTCSD28k7ssalG

Fish 1: Termina Seabass

zlCfzTCSK6chXH-Cf7

A common fish; pretty easy to catch. I don’t 100% remember, but you might need to use a normal fishing lure. I had trouble using the sinking lure.

Fish 2: Goodta Goby

zlCfzTCSOuEggd72mL

A common fish; pretty easy to catch.

Fish 3: Ambrosial Amberjack

zlCfzTCSSDEu80UqTX

A common fish; tends to be in the far north.

Fish 4: Bashful Angler

zlCfzTCSVtEBVlLpiP

Swim around while wearing the Stone Mask, and if there’s a chime, it means it’s there. Ripples indicate its location.

Fish 5: Dancing Sea Bream

zlCfzTCSY7Ab3oGwZy

It can only appear during the day. Dance using the Kamaro Mask for a few seconds to check if it’s there. There will be a chime if it is. If the ripples wear off, dance again.

Fish 6: Fairy Fish

zlCfzTCScFQ1LGbCAW

Swim around while wearing the Great Fairy Mask. I don’t remember if there’s a chime or not, but ripples indicate its location. It tends to be in the east near the underwater fairy cave.

zlCfzTCSG_UvdcsOLv

Fish 7: Ninja Flounder

zlCfzTCSfIkqYO-crr

Swim around while wearing the Garo Mask, and if there’s a chime, it means it’s there. Ripples indicate its location.

Fish 8: Skullfish

zlCfzTCSiVc3AuSRoZ

It can only appear at night. Swim around while wearing the Skull Captain’s Hat, and if there’s a chime, it means it’s there. Ripples indicate its location.

Fish 9: Neptuna

zlCfzTCSnn0cnvx1yg

This fish cannot appear on Day 2. All other times are okay. Swim around while wearing the Couple’s Mask, and if there’s a chime, it means it’s there. Ripples indicate its location.

Fish 10: Grand Swordfish

zlCfzTCSrggE_Wxpjo

This is one of the six “Boss Fish”. To make Boss Fish appear, I recommend catching a lot of fish on Day 1 (I’m just guessing 20 is more than enough). Make sure you are using the song of double time to slow time. It doesn’t matter where the fish are caught, so I would recommend fishing in the Swamp because the fish are easier to catch. If you fail to catch it and run out of time, you can return to your last save point and try again.

This guy is pretty darn tough. He’s pretty easy to check for though. Go into the ocean as a Zora and check if it’s there. It can be around any of the small islands. If it’s not there, leave the fishing hole and try again. I think I eventually caught him using a normal fishing lure instead of a sinking one, but I don’t remember. It’s possible that you need to be wearing the Goron Mask to reel him in successfully. When you hook him, the boss music will play. Enjoy.

Fish 11: Savage Shark

zlCfzTCSvjoNo9jOlj

These guys usually spawn as a group. When they appear, I have usually seen them in the southeast. To check if they are in the fishing hole, go into Zora form and walk to the seafloor. If it’s not there, leave the fishing hole and come back. If it is there, you want to hook a fish on your line near one. Don’t reel the smaller fish all the way in, but instead use it as bait to catch the Savage Shark. If it grabs the small fish, you have to hook him with the circle pad as if you are catching a new fish or he’ll get away. The boss music will play. Enjoy.

Fish 12: Great Fairy Fish

zlCfzTCSy_kNtERjc_

This is one of the six “Boss Fish”. To make Boss Fish appear, I recommend catching a lot of fish on Day 1 (I’m just guessing 20 is more than enough). Make sure you are using the song of double time to slow time. It doesn’t matter where the fish are caught, so I would recommend fishing in the Swamp because the fish are easier to catch. If you fail to catch it and run out of time, you can return to your last save point and try again.

This is the Queen of the Ocean; A creepy looking fish that has the same haircut as a Great Fairy. To check if this thing is in the fishing hole, go into Zora form and walk to the small underwater fairy cave in the northeast. If it’s there, it’ll be sitting in that cave, but you have to look carefully.

zlCfzTCSG_UvdcsOLv

If it’s not there, leave the fishing hole and come back. Once you know that it’s there, you want to get a Fairy Fish onto your line. Remember to use the Great Fairy Mask so it will be willing to take the bait. Don’t reel the Fairy Fish all the way in, but instead use it as bait to catch the Great Fairy Fish. When it grabs the Fairy Fish, you have to hook it with the circle pad as if you are catching a new fish or it’ll get away. The boss music will play. Enjoy.

Gaming Post 17: Super Mario 3D World

I had a good feeling about the number the random number generator gave me, and sure enough, my next post will be about the game Super Mario 3D World. This was the game that started what I like to call my “Year of Mario” in which I beat 26 games set within the Mario Universe in 365 days.

20140227220215!Super_Mario_3D_World_box_art

If you have a Wii U, this is a game that you should get. It’s pretty great. It’s the continuation of the 3D Mario series, and I was really happy to be able to play this game when it came out. There was actually a midnight release for this game, because it came out the same day that the Xbox One came out. Super Mario 3D World and Zelda: A Link Between Worlds both got this benefit. I picked up both games at midnight, went home and immediately booted up 3D World.

super-mario-3d-world-easter-eggs
Don’t forget to find this Easter Egg!

Now, I am sometimes known as being a big fan of the Zelda Series, so it might be surprising to some that I started with 3D World over A Link Between Worlds, but there is a logical explanation. My interest in Super Mario predates my interest in The Legend of Zelda. At one time I believed that Super Mario 64 was the most important video game in the world.

Fairy_Group_Artwork_-_Super_Mario_3D_World

The main objective in the story of Super Mario 3D World is to save pixie princesses from Bowser and his minions. Each stage has 3 Green Stars and a MiiVerse Stamp to collect, and in order to 100% the game, this must be done for every stage. Towards the end of the 100%ing process, every stage must have been cleared at least once by every playable character. These playable characters are Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, Peach, and Rosalina (who gets unlocked at some point after the story I think). The four characters you start with are the same as the characters in (and have the same physicality rules set by) America’s Super Mario 2 (Super Mario USA in Japan).

Plessie_Artwork_-_Super_Mario_3D_World

Of course, like always, there’s a new power up. Mario can now have all the powers of a Cat.

200px-Cat_Mario_Artwork_-_Super_Mario_3D_World

This is the first 3D Mario game in which multiple people can play at the same time, so all the levels were designed to be relatively flat with that in mind. It’s also the first 3D Mario game to be rendered in HD graphics.

Super_mario_3d_world_screenshot

The music in this game is on par with what we’ve heard in the Super Mario Galaxy series. I particularly like the moment in the game when you discover World Bowser. This is my favorite song in the whole game.

Bowser_Artwork_-_Super_Mario_3D_World

I like this song a lot too.

Mario 3D World fully integrates MiiVerse. What that means is that you see MiiVerse posts all over the place, some of which can be pretty entertaining, if only for how ridiculous they can be.

BaqkTjDCcAAtXVk

Now, I loved the Super Mario Galaxy series both for its gameplay and for the fact that it was a continuation of Mario’s Power Star collecting journey. Super Mario 3D world is a great game, but in my opinion, it wasn’t quite on par with the Super Mario Galaxy series. I think that because 3D World was designed for multiplayer, the levels were in some ways held back from reaching the epicness of Mario Galaxy.

Super_Mario_Galaxy_3

But just because I personally want a Super Mario Galaxy 3 or Sunshine 2, it doesn’t make 3D World any less of a game. In fact, 3D World introduced a new type of Mario level in the form of Captain Toad’s Adventures. The thing about Captain Toad is that his backpack is heavy, so he can’t jump. To get him through each of his stages, you must solve how to get through them like a puzzle.

captain-toad-game

These Captain Toad levels inspired a spinoff title the following year called Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. I liked that game too, but I’ll tell you more about that another day.
